Artstation Hand Topology Practice Though it seems the topology is hidden in the “knuckle spikes” details, the topology is actually there. also a peek at the knees which use the middle option of the first gif which contain all the major stretching compression and deformation to only happen behind the knees. here’s a hand i made for a commission i’m working on right now. Sachalek asked: i saw your explanation of joint topology in 3d modeling and it was a really clear explanation, thanks! i have one question. the ideal joint in the middle has a triangle, which would cause problems during smoothing. if you added an edge inside the part that bends, connecting the two triangles and making them quads, would it still.

Wunkolo: hands are probably going to be the most deforming thing on your mesh so it’s important to have geometry that facilitates deformation there. if you can think about the proper topology that certain joints and bends are going to have then all you really have to think of is modeling the topology that bridges these joints. Lay out your main edge loops for the hands. clean edge loops are essential in any 3d model you will do that will animate, and in our example the hand it becomes crucial as they are lots of joints and moving parts. but whenever you have a hard task at hand, first thing you do is break it down to small easier tasks and tackle one after the other. Hands are weird. there are like, 30 ways to retopologize a hand but this is the way i tend to do so. a tip: as i do, start from the fingers and work to the wrist. the fingers are most dense and you progressively reduce the number of loops until you can match the wrist.
