Drilling The Ramrod Hole вђ Grrw Collector Barrel channel and ramrod hole in hawken sn h 112. a common practice among custom builders in drilling the ramrod hole in a scratch build half stock rifle is to inlet the barrel, attach the under rib and upper pipes to the barrel, and use the pipes and under rib as a guide for the long drill rod while drilling the ramrod hole. On the early stocks, the ramrod hole in the forearm was cut out with a router after cutting the barrel channel as seen in the photo above. this was done to speed up the process and eliminate the chance of the drill bit wondering out the bottom of the forearm or up into the barrel channel or to one side or the other while drilling the ramrod hole.

On h 067, that distance is less than 0.20″. in other words, the web in the forearm between the barrel channel and the ramrod hole is less than 0.20″ instead of the more common 0.25″ web. the thinner web and smaller ramrod makes the forearm on h 067 much slimmer than other hawken rifles. Re: ramrod hole drill. here are the drills that i made. there are 3 sizes, 5 16, 3 8, and 7 16. they are made by taking a length of hardware store rod of the correct diameter and a spade bit of the same size. the bit is cut from its shank and placed in the slot cut in the end of the rod. i riveted them in place. I'm refurbishing a kit built rifle (.50 cal) that has 3 8" thimbles installed for the ramrod, but the builder used a 5 16" drill to make the ramrod hole in the lower forestock, and then used a 5 16" ramrod. short of buying or building a 3 8" ramrod hole drill, any suggestions for slightly.

Green river rifle works and its competitors. t he heyday of the original hawken was undoubtedly the late 1840’s and the 1850’s—the period of the great western migration to oregon, utah, and california. the demand for the hawken brother’s rifles during this period made these their most prolific years. but this was nothing compared to the. Ramrod grooves and holes aren't hard at all so long as you approach them with a plan. i inlet the barrel fully, then drill a pilot hole down through the channel where the entry thimble (into the fore end) will cover it up. this gives me a clear indication of the center of the barrel channel when i flip the stock over.
